# Versus workflow automation

> A category comparison: OCTOPUS versus workflow automation.

Automation platforms move data between tools on a fixed path, and a step either runs or fails. OCTOPUS runs goal-driven agents that claim tasks by capability, share one memory, and work inside per-lane bounds with autonomy you dial up. A step that needs a person goes to the Desk as a decision, not a stalled job, and a task closes on evidence rather than on the step completing.
